This project began with a common problem: old, inefficient doors that were failing to protect the home. The original garage and sunroom entry doors were drafty, and their metal brick molding was peeling and exposed after years of weather exposure, compromising both the home’s energy efficiency and its curb appeal. The goal was to replace these aging units with modern, high-performance doors that would provide superior insulation, enhanced security, and a clean, updated look that would last for decades with minimal maintenance.

The installation process was meticulous, with a primary focus on creating a completely weatherproof seal. Each opening was carefully prepped, installing new sill pans and applying a multi-layered defense of window and door waterproofing tape and Great Stuff foam sealant. The home’s construction presented an added complexity, with modern vinyl siding installed over an older layer of original wood siding. I carefully removed the old doors, replaced the surrounding J-channel for a perfect finish, and expertly integrated new, pre-pressed metal flashing from Kelly Window and Door to ensure water is channeled away from the door frame permanently.

Precision was key to the success of this installation. Each fiberglass Therma-Tru door was painstakingly shimmed to achieve perfect reveals and flawless operation. The sunroom door, in particular, required precise adjustments to fit the existing opening, but the result is a door that now opens, closes, and locks like butter. To complete the sunroom entry, I installed a high-quality glass storm door featuring convenient hold-open technology and powerful magnetic latches. I finished the installation by filling all nail holes, preparing the new trim for the homeowner to apply his own custom paint finish, resulting in a seamless collaboration and a beautiful, highly functional final product.
